Restaurant Inspection Ratings

The Douglas County Food Safety and Compliance inspectors perform over 5,500 routine inspections on over 3,200 Douglas County food establishments each year.

A food establishment includes: restaurants, schools, grocery stores, convenience stores, mobile units (food trucks), etc.

Food establishments are inspected for food safety and compliance with the Nebraska Pure Food Act and the Omaha Municipal Code.

The inspection frequency of food establishments is primarily dependent on food preparation processes and potential cross-contamination factors that increase the chance of a foodborne illness occurring within the establishment. A greater inspection frequency occurs within food establishments that have more complex food preparation processes and a greater chance of cross-contamination. Inspection frequency of food establishments varies between 180 days, 365 days, and 540 days depending on the potential for acquiring a foodborne illness. For example:

Inspection frequency is assigned according to the type of food, how it is prepared, and the potential for cross-contamination. These are important factors associated with the transmission of foodborne illness.

180-day frequency

Establishments that prepare food that requires cooking, cooling, and reheating before selling.

365-day frequency

Establishments that sell limited-preparation, processed foods.

540-day frequency

Establishments that sell prepackaged foods that require no food preparation.
